What exactly is the difference between a gas safety check and a service?

A gas safety check evaluates the basic safety of your home’s gas appliances. Its purpose is to ensure that everything is working properly and safely.

A safety check may include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Checking that gas appliances are burning properly and at the proper operating pressure
  • Ensure that harmful gases are safely removed from the appliance and released into the environment.
  • Ensure that ventilation routes are clear and adequate.
  • Ensure that all safety devices are operational.

A service will include a full check of a gas appliance, as well as the checks listed above:

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and perform the following equipment-specific actions:
  • Cleaning requires the removal of components.
  • Serviceable parts such as seals and gaskets are replaced.
  • Cleaning the heat exchanger as well as any flueways
  • Examine the appliance’s physical condition.
  • Examine the condition of any air vents and flues to ensure they have not deteriorated.
  • Perform combustion performance tests (where applicable) to ensure the appliance’s safe and efficient operation.
  • Carry out any necessary corrective action (your engineer will inform you of any additional costs)
  • Notify you of any problems discovered during the service.
