My boiler makes a kettling sound. What’s the problem, and what should I do?

Limescale buildup from hard water is the most common cause of a ‘kettling’ noise in a boiler. This mineral builds up in the heat exchanger, restricting water flow and causing the water to boil and evaporate into steam, which expands. This is what you’re hearing. It is possible to resolve the problem by replacing the heat exchanger, powerflushing the system, or adding an inhibitor to the system. The best course of action should be determined by a qualified heating engineer.
